Fun & Flirty Jewelry with a Coastal Chic Vibe

#GoGold!

Ashley PogueComment

As the whole country went PINK today, two things dawned on me. First, the human race is truly amazing. Seeing communities around the country of all ages band together to show support, raise awareness, and fight to cure breast cancer is very moving. The second thought was, last month was Childhood Cancer Awareness month; where were all these people then?

Via Danise Matthews Weber :)

Via Danise Matthews Weber :)

I am in full support of Breast Cancer Awareness month. 40 years ago, a woman getting the terrible news that she had breast cancer was much scarier than it is today. The breast cancer survival rate in 1971 was only 52%; today the 5 year survival rate is 89%. That's a phenomenal increase! More women (and men) are alive today due to funding that was made available to research a cure. A lot of this money is raised via awareness created by people just like you!

Well, the girls at Silly Seahorse and I have decided that we are going to do our part to raise awareness for those who fight a big fight... in a little body.

Cancer affects 1 in 285 children under the age of 20. Over 45 children are newly diagnosed with cancer daily. Cancer is the leading cause of death by disease of children in the United States. 1,250 children under the age of 15 are expected to die of cancer this year.  Many of those children who survive will suffer the side effects of treatment for the rest of their life. Unlike many adult cancers, the causes of childhood cancers are unknown and not linked to lifestyle or environment. All these facts are shocking... but the most heartbreaking of all is that only 4% of the National Cancer Institute's budget is allotted for childhood cancer research.

The children are our future! We believe that each and every one of them deserves the chance to become whatever they choose to be; a doctor who treats other cancer patients, a teacher who supports her student while his brother suffers from this disease; a proud father who spends every available moment with his healthy family. The way that we are going to increase the survival rates is by raising awareness. Let's give the children an opportunity to show us what their future holds, what our future holds!!!

Join us as we #GoGold all year long! Let's make Childhood Cancer a conversation. Many people are unaware of the statistics that surround kids and cancer. I was one of them until very recently when I found out that a sorority sister of mine was watching her sweet son fight this fight. Unfortunately, her time with him ended too soon; but, this doesn't have to be the case for every mother and son. Together, we can #GoGold and get #MoreThan4 for these babies!

The Silly Seahorse is donating 15% of all sales to Childhood Cancer Research. In addition, we will be donating 100% of the profits from any pieces of the #GoGold collection to the research efforts as well!

See the whole collection here! Silly Seahorse Fall 2015 Worth Ave Collection At this time, these bangles are only available for pre-order until we get them up on our website. However, just email us your list of goodies to getsilly@sillyseahorsepalmbeach.com and we will happily process your order ASAP!!!

Remember, you don't have to donate or spend money to make a difference, there are lots of ways you can get involved and share the message! Let's Fight Like a Kid!!!

In a world full of chunky statement pieces, these tiny Bar Bracelets shine out in the crowd. The Judy Bar Bracelet was actually the first piece in The Silly Seahorse collection. I just made a couple for myself, but after multiple comments from friends and strangers alike (and a little prodding from a few people in my life) I decided to expand the collection and thus the Seahorse was born!

I remember the day I finally decided to start The Silly Seahorse; I was wearing the Bar Bracelets mixed with a couple other bracelets I had bought from Charming Charlie and a friend (with impeccable taste) noticed them. She said, those bracelets are beautiful! My reply was short and non-nonchalant; I said, "Oh it's just junk jewelry" (Sorry, Charlie) and she specifically pointed out the Judy's and said... "No, those. Where did you get those?"

I don't always tell people that I make the jewelry I wear, sometimes it's just nice to say "Thank You", but after so many encouraging comments, I had to share these cuties with the world!

Sassy Shrimp Pasta... The Revamp

RecipesAshley PogueComment

There are few things that I can make in the kitchen... pasta, various tailgate foods, vodka drinks, and sweet potato casserole. Eclectic, I know... but I'm a firm believer in knowing your strengths and maximizing them.

Falling in to the first category of pasta... we have a little family recipe that I've actually perfected over the years. It has been passed down 3 generations at this point. Each woman putting her own touches on the recipe. Mostly the same, with little tweaking here and there.

First it was, Pissed Off Pasta (which we later decided sounded too offensive and switched to "Angry" Pasta).

Then there was Angle Hair with Attitude; how cute is that?!?

And now... the coup de grace for anyone trying to keep a low-carb diet... we're serving up Sassy Shrimp Pasta!

This is no secret family recipe. No talking golden retriever is going to cover my lips on this one. I'm just excited to share a recipe that's so easy and delicious!

image.jpg

 Ingredients:

  • 1lb Linguine (you can use whatever pasta you like, but I love it al dente and linguine seems perfect for this...As opposed to angel hair... which I always overcook)
  • 1 jar of tomato sauce (again, you can use any sauce you like, but try to choose one that will pair nicely with seafood)
  • 1 jar of alfredo sauce (again, chefs choice)
  • 1.75lb of wild caught shrimp (I'm a fan of fresh, local shrimp but realize that's not so easy in other parts of the country. If you're buying cleaned shrimp, you'll need .5-.75lb; and try to make sure it's not farm raised)
  • 2 cloves fresh garlic
  • 2 teaspons olive oil
  • Crushed red pepper to taste
  • Salt & pepper

Step #1: Get your water on to boil (with a little salt & oil) while you clean the shrimp.

Cleaning the shrimp is a secretly satisfying experience. Haha

Step #2: Salt & pepper your shrimp. Then get your oil  & garlic hot in the pan.

Step #3: Add the pasta to the water & the shrimp to your oiled/garlic pan.

Step #4: Let the shrimp start to cook on the bottom (goes from translucent pink to opaque white).

image.jpg

Step #5: Once the shrimp looks half cooked, add the tomato sauce and alfredo sauce to the pan with the shrimp.

image.jpg

Step #6: Now comes the Sass... add in the crushed red pepper. **Take note... those little flakes sneak up on you! If you're making for people with a wide range of "taste", remember you can always add more spice... but you can't take it away... no matter how much your guests eyes water (no, this has never happened to me...😉)

Step #7: Let it all stew for about 2 minutes and serve it up! Set the table with ramekins of crushed red pepper flakes, so the more adventurous can "kick it up a notch"

Some like it hot!

Some like it hot!

If you're a planner, this meal is fabulous with an Italian salad and some garlic bread... but the real beauty of this meal is that it's quick and pantry ready! Drop in guests?!? Welcome! Late afternoon on the boat?!? No worries! Late night at the office?!? We got you covered! Stock the sauces and pasta in your pantry and a girl should always have a pound of shrimp in the freezer... they thaw quick and cook fast!

Give our Sassy Shrimp Pasta a whirl... and let us know what you think!

Practically Imperfect in Every Way

Ashley PogueComment

Being a Type A person, I struggle with perfection... Though struggle seems too benign of a word... Sometimes it's downright debilitating.

If I feel that I can't tackle a project with an A+ end result, I usually procrastinate until the last possible moment. At least then, when the result is not exemplary, I can blame it on the fact that I was in a rush. Now if that's not backward thinking, I don't know what is!

This was the problem that I had with the Angi Ring. When I first started showing the collection to friends and family I was almost ashamed of the rings. Not one of them was made the same way. Each wire wrap was slightly different from ring to ring. Even different from one side to another!

I found myself apologizing for the rings not being exactly alike. Offering to make another one for people so they had two rings that matched perfectly. But no one else seemed to be bothered. As a matter of fact, they loved the individuality of each piece.

The rings began flying off the shelves and quickly became a best seller! Pictures came in of people loving their rings! Buying them as best friend rings (so cute!)

And so with each day that I wear my (now) two favorite rings, Off Shore White and Clear Skies, I remember that beauty isn't perfection. And perfection isn't beauty.

We need to work on being kinder to others and ourselves! What makes us different makes us beautiful! ... and the same goes for handmade jewelry ;)

I mean, even Mary Poppins was only practically perfect!

The Keys to a Good Vacation!

LifestyleAshley PogueComment

When it comes to summertime in Florida, a little Keys vaca is always a must!! It covers a multitude of vacationing needs! Food, wildlife, booze, boating, sunrising, and sunsetting! A week never seems like enough... but if you only have a weekend, it's still worth the trip!

Hope you like seafood!

Mahi Mahi are plentiful down there. You can order a dolphin sandwich and feel pretty confident that fish was swimming yesterday! Or you can catch it yourself and grill it right on the boat in the middle of the ocean!

fishin.JPG

If you're looking for a little fried treat, the Lobster Bites at Sunset Grille on Marathon never disappoint! Also, the Conch Fritters from Sparky's Landing in Key Colony Beach were recommended by a fellow Silly Girl... and boy was she right! Fried to perfection and loaded with conch ;)

Vacation = No Diet, right?!?

No shortage on wildlife!

For the Bambi lovers, there's the Key Deer on Big Pine Key. Deer just roam around the streets picking treats out of peoples yards and waiting for someone to stop and take their picture (or ask for directions to No Name Pub)!

For the country folk, there are Roosters that strut the land down there. And by land, I mean typically gas stations. Odd but true.

And for the reptile people, Iguanas also wander freely... like so free, they're not scared of you. At all. I was laying in the sun snoozing, only to open my eyes to find a creepy creature sunning himself about 4 feet away. Not cool. I went the long way to the bathroom.

In short, make sure you always have a camera, it's like a tropical safari!

Hmm... they all seem to be going the same way... wonder what that's about?!?

Hmm... they all seem to be going the same way... wonder what that's about?!?

You Can't Drink All Day if You Don't Start in the Morning!

... It is vacation, after all! Even if you do spend a little time working; spirits increase the spirits! You have to venture to Big Pine Key to visit the No Name Pub... but you better ask for good directions! Their slogan is "A Nice Place If You Can Find It". It was built in 1936 and I'm pretty sure the 78 years of dollar bill wallpaper that's posted on the walls is definitely a fire hazard! Guess the Fire Marshall must not know where to find it ;)

Down in Key West there's bars on bars on bars... but of course you have to stop for a Hurricane at Fat Tuesdays! It may be a little touristy... but I've been called worse things! Then grab a beer from The Porch for a much more laid-back, local experience. They have a huge selection of craft beers and... my favorite, bar games!

Sunrise! Suntan! Sunset! REPEAT

The Florida Keys is a special place because you can easily catch a Sunrise, spend the day lounging, not driving or flying to the other coast. Then, low and behold, view a gorgeous Sunset!!

Sunrise is beautifully captured on the water, if you're lucky enough to be woken up before dawn to go fishing ;)

sunrise.jpg

For Sunset, you'll want to catch the Sunset Celebration at Mallory Square in Key West. Just don't go in the rain like we did! Haha. Impressive (odd) street performers and psychics make for interesting people watching, if nothing else. Another good spot for a sunset is the bar at the Keys Fisheries.. They rename it every year! You can enter your idea for the bar name for a $1 donation to a local daycare. I LOVE naming things!!!

Of course, no vacation is every really work free. So we used the beautiful scenery to take some new pictures of our pretty jewels. We're working diligently to get them all online, but in the meantime here's a sneak peek! What do you think??

Give the People What They Want!

Ashley PogueComment

I've had a lot of people ask me if I will make the bangles with larger stones. So while I was in New York last week, I popped in to a bead store and picked out a few goodies. I had SO much fun picking out the different shapes and sizes! Only having about 30 minutes before the store closed, I quickly picked out about a dozen each of 10 different stones and went merrily on my way.

New beads just waiting to be BANGLED up!

New beads just waiting to be BANGLED up!

When I got home I couldn't wait to start bangling (New term. Take note, Webster) right away! I made myself a few bracelets and wore them out over the weekend... I was shocked by the response!! So many people admiring and commenting on my little arm party! Since Saturday, I've had people buy bracelets off my arm in Publix, two different restaurants and my DENTIST office!!! The verdict is in; everyone is loving them!

Always be prepared for a sale! Even when brunching at Blondie's.

Unfortunately, I didn't buy nearly enough beads to keep up with this (happily unexpected) demand. So we decided to make these limited quantity bangles available to our Facebook Friends ONLY! In order to access the store to purchase these, you'll have to know the super secret password. Okay... so it's not that secret. Just type in the word 'facebook' to gain access to the sale here!

Who loves you, baby?

Ashley PogueComment

Growing up, I had no idea how tough it is to be a mom to a teenage girl (a girl of any age, really). I still have no first-hand experience, but I certainly have a lot more appreciation! Girls are fragile and fierce all at the same time; trying to raise one is a balancing act that would terrify that guy that tight roped across the Grand Canyon last year.

Like so many mommies out there, mine is the best my sister and I could have asked for (though she will yell at me for ending that sentence in a preposition). Her love and support is never ending and judgment free.

One thing that makes my mom so fabulous is how special she makes us feel on our birthday. I still wear a crown, boa, sash, obnoxious necklaces and, of course, special Birthday Girl koozies! I might look like I'm turning 4, but that's alright with me! Everyone gets to celebrate holidays together, but a birthday is the one day a year that everyone gets to celebrate YOU!! My mom has always done a super job of making us feel like we're on top of the world on our birthday! And whenever we thank her or ask how we got so lucky to have a mom like her... the reply is simply, "who loves you, baby?".

While my mom is the best… I know there are millions of other fabulous mommies out there that deserve some recognition too! Tell us what makes your mom special and you could win matching mommy-daughter rings!!!
